Measures of psychosocial, health, and treatment characteristics were also administered.
The overall prevalence of depressive symptoms was 13.8% (95% Confidence Interval (95%CI): 10.9, 17.3). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified current comorbid chronic illness (adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) 5.72, 95% CI: 2.28, 14.34; p < 0.001), cART regimen (aOR 6.93, 95%CI: 2.34, 20.49; p < 0.001), perceived HIV-related stigma (aOR 1.10, 95%CI: 1.05, 1.14, p < 0.001) and difficulties accessing HIV care and treatment services (aOR 2.37, 95%CI: 1.14, 4.91; p = 0.02) as correlates of depressive symptoms.
The prevalence of depressive symptoms among adults living with HIV on the Kenyan coast is high. Those at high risk for elevated depressive symptoms (e.g., with comorbid chronic illnesses, on second-line cART, experiencing perceived HIV-stigma or with problems accessing HIV care) may benefit from early identification, treatment or referral, which requires integration of mental health programmes into HIV primary care.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1471-244X</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1471-244X</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1186/s12888-019-2339-5</identifier><identifier>PMID: 31675938</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>England: BioMed Central Ltd</publisher><subject>Adults ; Analysis ; Care and treatment ; cART ; Chronic diseases ; Comorbidity ; Correlates ; Depression (Mood disorder) ; Depressive symptoms ; Health ; Health surveys ; Highly active antiretroviral therapy ; HIV ; HIV carriers discrimination ; HIV/AIDS ; Kenya ; Medical research ; Prevalence ; Regression analysis</subject><ispartof>BMC psychiatry, 2019-11, Vol.19 (1), p.333-333, Article 333</ispartof><rights>COPYRIGHT 2019 BioMed Central Ltd.</rights><rights>The Author(s). 2019</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c532t-eb1d2d7cbb26e35d05d5094dc0e954ed93e411eba58c3b0115bd06d38053a16d3</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c532t-eb1d2d7cbb26e35d05d5094dc0e954ed93e411eba58c3b0115bd06d38053a16d3</cites><orcidid>0000-0002-7761-0718</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6825356/pdf/$$EPDF$$P50$$Gpubmedcentral$$Hfree_for_read</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6825356/$$EHTML$$P50$$Gpubmedcentral$$Hfree_for_read</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>230,314,727,780,784,885,27924,27925,37013,53791,53793</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31675938$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Nyongesa, Moses K</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Mwangi, Paul</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Wanjala, Stanley W</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Mutua, Agnes M</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Newton, Charles R J C</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Abubakar, Amina</creatorcontrib><title>Prevalence and correlates of depressive symptoms among adults living with HIV in rural Kilifi, Kenya</title><title>BMC psychiatry</title><addtitle>BMC Psychiatry</addtitle><description>Published research on depression among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) from Africa is increasing, but data from Kenya remains scarce.
