Summary:In the past three decades it has become particularly important role of educational administration as a builder of academic leadership. The treatment of this phenomenon is diverse, and it foreshadowed in the various descriptive studies regarding management in institutions of higher education. The main objective of this paper is to explore from a global perspective the progress made in studies on women's access to positions of educational administration. It is also on track to socialize the partial progress of the study currently advances on the characteristics of academic leadership of women in leadership positions, in the light of social and demographic variables at universities in Bogota-Colombia. This exploration is a literature review by secondary sources of scientific basis, that its results presents a reflection of the conglomeration of perspectives: internal / external obstacles that reproduce discrimination traditionally male fields, the approach of tactics that have allowed women avoid these barriers and exercise of women's leadership in educational administration. In conclusion a range of topics that guide analysis of the situation of women in the leadership of higher education, and highlight a phenomenon of international character that deserves to be studied for the improvement and stimulation of women's participation in educational leadership is obtained.
