Description
Summary:Numerical assessment of failure of concrete is one of the challenging processes in civil engineering. Assumption of homogeneity of concrete is believed to be the main reason behind these issues and recent studies on concrete failure pattern point to the fact that if it is possible to create numerical model consisting of individual components of concrete, say, cement gel, gravel/sand/crushed rock and the inter-facial-transition-region, separately, this can be solved to some extent. This paper describes the development of a software – MesoGen – for the simplified mesoscopic modeling of concrete by avoiding the interfacial-transition-zone. Using MesoGen, mesoscopic models of concrete were generated using real sieve analysis and concrete mix data. The generated models were compared with the actual concrete cube of same dimension and it is found that number of aggregates in each segment of sieve analysis grading curve is comparable with that in the numerical model. Also time of generation of various numerical models is compared by varying the parameters in the process and is tabulated. This software will be a useful tool for research in the field of numerical mesoscopic modeling of concrete.
