description The aim of this study is to report the relationship between bladder compliance and nocturia in men presenting with a variety of lower urinary tract symptoms, and to clarify the level at which bladder compliance becomes an important contributor to nocturia. We report the results of a retrospective analysis of 104 men who presented to a single center with lower urinary tract symptoms and subsequently underwent urodynamic studies and completed a 24-hour bladder diary. Regression analyses to predict the determinants of nocturia and bladder compliance were completed, and the difference in actual number of nightly voids (ANV) was determined for those above and below 3 different cut-offs for bladder compliance: 20, 40, and 60 mL/cm H2O. Bladder compliance is inversely related to nocturia, likely due to the relationships between age, maximum voided volume, and bladder compliance. Significant differences in ANV exist between the men above and below the bladder compliance cut-offs of 40 and 60 mL/cm H2O, with the greatest difference seen at the cut-off of 60. Bladder compliance < 60 mL/cm H2O appears to be a minor contributing factor to nocturia severity that is overshadowed by other bladder diary variables.
