description Cranial and spinal congenital disorders are the main reason for operative therapy in pediatric patients. Other indications are tumour surgery and trauma. Spinal surgery consists in different reconstructive approaches for neural tube defects and dysraphism: detethering and closure of the neural placode and meninges, dissection of adjacent lipoma. The cranial indications consist in corrections oft the cranial vault in premature synostosis of syndromal and non-syndromal origin. In tumour surgery reconstructive approaches are important, if the tumour is located in proximity to craniofacial regions, orbital or skull base structures. In Europe every year 4,500 children with disorders of the nervous system are born (EUROCAT – ). Congenital disorders of the nervous system count for about 20% and implicate a high neonatal mortality and morbidity and sometimes require neurosurgical care and supervision throughout the patients lifetime.
