Summary: | [Display omitted]
•Thyroid, developmental neuro-, and kidney toxicities of OUVFs were investigated in zebrafish.•OUVFs reduced TH levels and influence the transcription of associated genes.•OUVFs induced hypoactivity and anxiety-like behavior along with altered neurogenesis and synaptogenesis-related genes.•OUVFs elevated proteinuria levels, linked to down-regulation of genes important for glomerular structure and function.
Organic UV filters (OUVFs) have been commonly used in sunscreen and many consumer products. Following dermal application, these compounds can enter circulation and may cause systemic effects in humans. In the present study, we chose four OUVFs frequently detected in the environment, i.e., avobenzone (AVB), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), octocrylene (OC), and octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), and evaluated their thyroid, neurodevelopmental, and kidney toxicities. For this purpose, zebrafish embryos ( |
