Description
Summary:Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, coal and gas, as well as deforestation is the primary origin of harmful gases being released to the atmosphere; contributing to the rising carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere and rapidly causing climate change. Thus alternative energy systems are needed to preserve our environment while meeting our increasing energy demands. This review attempts to highlight the different strategies in energetic biomass conversion with an emphasis on biogas production. The effect of pretreatment on digestibility of biomass by anaerobes and its subsequent impact on biogas yield is presented. The health of biogas digester as a function of feedstock composition, reactor design and operations was also highlighted. A brief overview of the risks involved in biogas plant was provided. The threat posed by antibiotic compounds has been estimated by a recent study to be within 1.3 - 809 mg/L and their presence can cause severe alterations in the biogas production tendencies of digesters.
