Description
Summary:The aim of this paper is to discuss some aspects of Luis Álvares Pinto’s (Recife, 1719-1789) earliest known pedagogical work. His manuscript Arte de Solfejar (Recife, 1761) is analysed in the context of the history of education. Its relation to other musical treatises from the mid-eighteenth century in Portuguese language is also taken into account. We can affirm that Arte de Solfejar offers valuable information about the main difficulties beginners encountered in elementary musical training. Álvares Pinto’s main concern was to overcome these difficulties through the simplification of some fundaments of the Solfège, and through the use of specific exercises for the beginning pupil. The treatise, moreover, may be seen as an element of personal and professional self-assertiveness of Pinto in a context of institutional uncertainty.
