Summary:The project of industrial ecology is to offer guidance to the industrial systems, in order that they function in a cyclic way. After having developed the principal arguments which militate in favour of industrial ecology and having offered an exemplary case, I will examine the limits of the analogy between industrial systems and ecological systems, thus expressing the circumstances and the factors which preclude the former to function at least roughly like the latter. The exemplary case having shown that technological effectiveness is not enough to grant a competitive advantage, I will finish by offering support to the contention that one can regard industrial ecology as a form of Utopia.
