Summary: | According to the literature, 15-24% of the patients undergoing surgical resection for suspected biliary malignancy have a benign etiology. Less common causes of malignant biliary stricture include metastatic cancer of the pancreas or liver, gallbladder cancer obstructing the bile duct, ampullary tumors growing into the bile duct, or malignant periportal lymph nodes. [6],[7] Intraductal ultrasonography (IDUS) that involves the insertion of a high-frequency ultrasound probe into the bile duct over a guidewire has shown a diagnostic accuracy of around 90% in some studies. |
