Whether serum IgG or autoantibodies regulate bone mass under healthy conditions is poorly studied. In elderly men, neither serum levels of polyclonal IgG nor autoantibody were associated with areal bone mineral density in the MrOS Sweden study. Repetitive systemic injections of high-dose polyclonal IgG complexes in mice did not exert any discernible impact on bone mineral density. However, repetitive local intra-articular injection of the same IgG complexes led to a localized reduction of trabecular bone density. These results indicate antibodies may only impact bone density when close to the bone, such as within the synovial joint. |
