Description
Summary:Dissolved and particulate cadmium (Cd) concentrations in water and diatoms from the Bah a Blanca Estuary, Argentina, were measured. The study area receives significant urban and industrial discharges. An ecotoxicological study of Thalassiosira curviseriata diatom (the dominant species in winter phytoplankton blooms) growth when exposed to several concentrations of Cd also was conducted in the laboratory. Cd levels in the estuary are significantly lower than the EC50 values determined for T. curviseriata. Although Cd does not appear to be a hazard at present, toxicity tests on organisms at other trophic levels should be conducted.
