Description
Summary:Objective: To investigate the protective effect of a herb Tribulus Terrestris on Nifedipine induced damage on microstructure of testes. Study Design: Animal Experimental Study. Place and Duration of Study: The present study was undertaken for a period of 18 months with effect from October, 2012 to April, 2014 at Shifa College of Medicine, Islamabad. Materials and Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats (N=120) were divided into four groups, each comprising of 30 rats. Group A was given Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), whereas group B, C and D were given Nifedipine only, Tribulus terrestris only and Nifedipine and Tribulus terrestris both respectively, by oral route for 56 days. At the end of experiment the diameter of seminiferous tubules and height of germinal epithelium was measured in H& E stained slides of testes in all groups and then compared. Results were analyzed on SPSS version 22. Results: There was a significant difference in mean tubular diameter and height of germinal epithelium of testes between Nifedipine only group and treated rats which were given Tribulus extract with Nefidipine, showing its protective effect on the treated group. Conclusion: Extract of Tribulus Terrestris helps in inhibiting the damaging effects of Nifedipine on histomorophometry of testis.
