Summary: | The internal armed conflict that affected the northern region of the department of Cauca (Colombia) altered the ancestral link between Afro-descendant communities and nature. Seeking the recognition of these events and the consequent damages generated, the Community Council of the Cauca river basin and of the Teta and Mazamorrero rivers micro-basin (Buenos Aires and Santander de Quilichao, Cauca) requested the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) to recognize the Cauca river as a victim of the armed conflict from an ethnic, territorial and socio-ecological perspective that advocates for the intrinsic relations between the human and the non-human. The article draws on this experience to investigate the factors that enable the influence of ethnic communities on such instances. Following a methodology of Participatory Action Research that accounts for the process of reflection, healing and socioecological community claim before the JEP and the theoretical frameworks of local peacebuilding, decoloniality and infrapolitics, the research demonstrates the potential of ancestral knowledge and historical-political processes of Afro-descendant communities to promote new approaches, notions and methodologies for the recognition of nature as a victim of the armed conflict, thus challenging the modern-liberal-capitalist vision of transitional justice.
