Description
Summary:•Bromides of TEMPO+ have promising perspectives for use in modern energy storage devices.•Oxidation of TEMPO with Br2 in organic solvents gives only TEMPO+Br3− (but not TEMPO+Br−!).•TEMPO+Br3− decay with TEMPOH2+ formation was observed in TFA, CDCl3 and CD3CN.•TEMPO+Br− exists only in aqueous solution and can be obtained by dissolving CTC TEMPO+Br3−/2TEMPO.•The redox transformation of TEMPO+Br− into CTC was observed for the first time. The preparation and characteristics of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxoammonium bromides, old compounds with promising perspectives for use in modern energy storage devices, were reinvestigated. Moreover, their redox transformations, previously unreported, were revealed.
