Description
Summary:The article deals with the satires of Gabriel Simeoni (published in Turin, in 1549), an author who belonged to the group of the so-called satirical-burlesque poets for their attempt to mix up two fruitful traditions in the sixteenth century inspired respectively either in Ariosto or in Bemi. The author aims to examine if the allegations against the faithful imitation of Petrarch and the linguistic norms present in the first satire of the collection can be actually traced in the rest of the work. In fact, it is possible to detect a certain propensity to accept forms that do not totally adhere to Bembo's rules, such as, for example, the use of typical features of the contemporary Florentine vernacular, or the use of colloquial lexicon and a phrasal colloquial register that are typical of comical-realistic poetry. However, Simeoni simultaneously attempts to achieve an average style free from archaisms and vulgarisms.
