Description
Summary:This study sets out to contribute to the lingering debate on the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and community development using the Nigerian oil industry as a case study. A better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the different CSR initiatives undertaken by the various oil multinational companies (MNCs) operating in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria was closely examined. The research also scrutinized why despite considerable increases in the oil MNC's CSR spending on community development, little or no growth has occurred. The role of the Nigerian Government in CSR was also examined, and the result was that the Nigerian government failed to create an enabling environment. To this effect, the research has categorically examined the problems and issues facing the host communities concerning the exploration of oil in the Niger Delta. Feasible solutions and recommendations were suggested to ensure sustainable development in the region and prevent further escalation of environmental crises, thus bringing about a peaceful co-existence among the various stakeholders. In appreciating the findings and recommendations of this research work, it is necessary for the oil industries, policymakers, and host communities to have a firm understanding of their commitment and their responsibilities to one another.
