Description
Summary: ABSTRACTRelationship between body weight and the load in elderly in the Leg Press exerciseIntroduction: Functional disability increases chronic diseases and reduces autonomy in aging. Physical exercise (PE) promotes improvement in functional capacity (FC), resistance training (RT) should be preferred to enhance the FC. The gold standard for prescription of RT is the one repetition maximum test (1RM). The ability to correlate 1 RM performance with anthropometric variables make it possible to estimate 1RM, being helpful in choosing and rating the load obtained in test. Objective: evaluate the relative muscle strength index (RMSI) on Leg Press exercise in elderly different age groups. Methods: 49 elderly, 14 sexagenarians (64.36 ± 2,8 years) with body mass index (BMI) of 27.6 ± 4.2 kg/m2, 10 septuagenarians (72.8 ± 2.2 years) with BMI 27.3 ± 4.8 kg/m2 and 25 octogenarians 83.16 ± 3.3 years and BMI 25.6 ± 4.2 kg/m2 were subjected to the 1RM test and RMSI value was determined by the formula: 1RM load/body weight. Results: There was no difference between groups related to BMI (p = 0.301). Regarding the load in 1RM, the sexagenarians obtained 162.5 ± 35.8 kg, 139 ± 37.3 kg septuagenarians and octogenarians 102.4 ± 35.8 kg with differences between groups (p = 0.003). Regarding to RMSI, sexagenarians obtained 2.33 ± 0.44, 2.14 ± 0.48 and septuagenarians, octogenarians 1.77 ± 0,49 with difference between groups (p
