IMPACT OF MgCl2 ADDITION ON THE FORMATION OF NANO-CRYSTALLINE HERCYNITE SYNTHESISED BY CO-PRECIPITATION METHOD

The effects of MgCl2 additions on the synthesis of hercynite were investigated. Hercynite was prepared by coprecipitation of AlCl3.6H2O and FeCl2.4H2O along with different amounts of MgCl2 at 60 C. The coprecipitated materials were then calcined at 1300, 1400 and 1500 C in air. The phase composition...

Description
Summary:The effects of MgCl2 additions on the synthesis of hercynite were investigated. Hercynite was prepared by coprecipitation of AlCl3.6H2O and FeCl2.4H2O along with different amounts of MgCl2 at 60 C. The coprecipitated materials were then calcined at 1300, 1400 and 1500 C in air. The phase composition and microstructure of samples were studied using XRD and SEM. Results showed that the formation of hercynite took place with the presence of MgCl2 due to the release of Mg2+ cations, and was followed by the formation of spinel structure and its evolution to a hercynite structure. The addition of MgCl2 influenced the amount of hercynite phase produced and the hercynite crystallite size increased as the calcination temperature increased from 1300 to 1500 C.
