Description
Summary:The new Spanish Educational System, part of Ley Orgánica de Educación (LOE, 2006), includes a recommendation by the Commission of Education of the European Union to develop key competences in educational institutions of no-university level. This article shows the difficulties involved in implementing a model of education based on competences, in the complex or holistic sense proposed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in its report on Definition and Selection of Competences (DeSeCo), in an educational system whose structure still exhibits a Car- tesian organising structure, centred upon the classical academic subjects, since within this structure it is impossible to tackle real problems (the only source for a development of competences) which are inherently non-disciplinary. From this analysis, the need to develop a process of curricular integration is proposed, a process focused on education around real problems whose qualities demand the involvement of academic knowledge from different disciplinary areas.
