Summary: | Several types of coatings were studied for the protection of V-base alloys in air at 2000 F ORABOVE. A specimen of V-1 wt-% Ti-60 BaTiO3 Nb siliconized by pack-cementation, withstood exposure to 2000 F air for 500 hr without evidence of failure or hardening of the alloy base. At 2200 F, a similar coating failed at a corner in 16.5 hr, although the remainder of the coating afforded good protection. Small quantities of Y2O3 produced a substantial increase in the mp of V2O5, and the oxide mixture offered shorttime protection to the V alloy base at 2000 F. Roll-cladding of 70Fe-25Cr-5Al sheet to V-5 wt-% Ti-20 wt-% Nb at 2000 F produced a strong bond. Liquid-phase sintered Cr-Au, a fused NiCr base alloy, and flame-sprayed BaTiO3 gave protection for 0.5 to 1 hr at 2000 F. (A UTHOR) |
