Summary: | Tensile tests were performed on longitudinal specimens of various gage lengths at temperatures to 2000 F and velocities to 575 ft/sec. Free bulging of tubes and discs were tested at varying velocities from static to 800 ft/sec. utilizing high and low explosives, the former in water and the latter in air. Critical speeds were found for the longitudinal specimens resulting in considerable loss in ductility at the higher speeds. No criticals were found for the tubular specimens. For all the alloys tested, the ductility is at least maintained at the higher velocities and, in some cases, is increased considerably. Experimental work was conducted in high pressure rubber forming to pressures of 50,000 psi with considerable increases in formability. Free forming radius, minimum flange, and shrink flange formability have been increased at each incremental increase of pressure. Critical pressures have been found beyond which forming cannot be improved appreciably. (Author) |
