Description
Summary:Areas of basic research on human performance that (a) should be supported if additional funds are ava lable, (b) have general value for all three military departments but for one reason or another are not adequately integrated by the departments, and (c) are best carried out in central laboratories or through large-scale programs are identified. Three areas of basic research on human performance meeting these criteria were identified: (1) Sensory capacities- (a) Complex pattern discrimination, and (b) Establishing and maintaining discrimination. (2) Skills- (a) Analysis of skills, and (b) Teaching devices. (3) Stress- (a) Environmental stresses, (b) Behavioral stress, (c) Individual differences, and (d) Sleep and fatigue. Recommendations are made for a central laboratory outside the individual military departments but supported by contracts or grants of the Department of Defense that would cover these research areas. Other areas of research should be supported programmatically either on a project-basis or in laboratories recommended by other Working Gr ups. (Author)
