Description
Summary:Methods are presented for analyzing the relative basic research performance of industrial firms. These methods are then applied in an analysis of basic research by American industrial firms in the fields of hysics, mathematics, and chemistry during the years 1957 through 1960. Basic research is found to be almost entirely confined to six industries: electrical equipment and communications, chemicals, petroleum, drugs, machinery, and aerospace. This analysis indicates hat the electrical equipment and communications industry dominates American industrial basic research in the physical sciences. Of the individual companies, dominant leadership is held by the American Telephone + Telegraph Company and the General Electric Company. (Author)
