description | A study initiated last quarter on the effect of temperature on the photopolymerization of perfluorooxydipropionyl fluoride and perfluorooxydipropionyl fluoride dimer was continued in the fourth quarter. Initial results from reactions at 100, 50, and 20 degrees indicate that temperature does not have a significant effect on the yield and number-average molecular weight of linear polymer from either monomer. A start was made on photosensitizing the polymerization of perfluorooxydipropionyl fluoride. An examination was made of the base hydrolysis procedure outlined last quarter for the conversion of acid fluoride-terminated polymers to acids. Indications are that a final washing of a wet ether solution of the acid with water is the key step in removal of hydrogen fluoride. Heat aging data for cured polymers were brought up to date. With the preparation of an amide crosslinked polymer (from (CF2)8(CH2NH2)2 and CH3OOC(CF2CF2OCF2CF2)(X)COOCH3), the stability of fluoroether polymer was found to decrease in the order triazine amide ester urethane. The amide polymer was quite strong and had good hydrolytic stability. |
