Summary: | Primary consideration was given to the effect of various secondary fluids on the total weight of the heat exchanger and primary shielding system and on the total pumping power required to pump both the primary and secondary fluids through the secondary heat exchanger. In establishing a basis for comparison, the heat exchanger was optimized. (i.e., the tube geometry was so selected that either the weight of the secondary heat exchanger and the shielding system was a minimum for a given pumping power or the pumping power was a minimum for a given secondary heat exchangershielding system weight). On the basis of weight and pumping power requirements, the various alkali metals rank as follows as secondary fluids: (1) Lithium, (2) Sodium, (3) NaK-44, (4) NaK-78, (5) Potassium, with number (1) being the best. Relative merit numbers were established for making these ratings and are discussed. (Author) |
