Summary: | Two single-degree-of-freedom gyroscopes, operated as a passive control system, are used to damp the attitude error rates of earth-pointing satellites. The particular gyrostabilizer configuration studied in this report is called a vertical-vee system. The angular momentum vectors of both gyros are symmetrically skewed from the orbital rate vector in the pitch-yaw plane; the gyro input axes are also contained in that plane. The equations of motion are presented and analyzed (for the case of small angular disturbances). The integral-square error, as a transient performance index, is introduced, and its use in system optimization is described. Also presented are some of the concepts that have been used in designing the type of gyroscope needed for the gyrostabilizer application. (Author) |
