Summary: | The technology of using high-temperature dies for closed die forging was further advanced by a program having three broad objectives: (1) extended the die temperature beyond the 1600F previously achieved, and determine the upper temperature limit of Inconel 713C for forging steel; (2) evaluate the possibility of using the high-temperature die system to reduce the number of forging sequences required to form a part; and (3) develop materials and techniques for raising the die temperature to 2400F and use such a system for forging a molybdenum alloy.
