Description
Summary:In the interest of developing a device for improving level of comprehension, the purpose of the experiment was to test the relationship between comprehension level and certain measures of reading eye-movements. The personnel of the experiment were college students. The reading materials and comprehension checks were taken from standardized reading achievement tests. Eye-movements, while reading, were recorded by means of the electroculogram technique. Comprehension scores were studied in relation to total time taken to read the experimental selection, total number of eye-movements made while reading the selection, number of saccadic movements made in a left-right direction and in a right-left direction along the line of print. Correlations between total count and number of left-right saccadic movements with comprehension score were not found to be significant. Number of regressive saccades and total time were found to predict comprehension score. (Author)
