Summary:The general findings of the lighting survey indicate that the lighting is outdated, inefficient, and substandard. The illumination on the desks in the officers' staterooms is generally about half of the normal specified levels. The illumination in the crews berths is grossly inadequeate it was about one-tenth of the adequate reading level. Light level throughout the vessel should be brought up to suggested minima Ref. 1,2. The light level should be 20 footcandles minimum on desks and other work areas. Light level for reading in berths should be 10 ft-c or minimum. The replacement of present fluorescent fixtures with larger fixtures is recommended in the ward room and the crews' mess room. New reading lights should be installed in all berths with priority given to the replacement of the old type found in crews' quarters. In the officers' staterooms, incandescent fixtures should be replaced by fluorescent fixtures.
