Summary: | A description of the 1-inch tunnel at the Forest Grove building is given together with the pertinent numerical data for its operation. The tunnel was constructed as a model with which to determine the design criteria for larger hypersonic tunnels and to investigate the properties of high Mach number (4 to 10) streams. The description includes a discussion of the principle of blow-down operation, the characteristics of the nozzle design for M = 4.38 and the function of the diffuser section. The Mach number obtained was 4.2, and results are given for this flow where it is shown that the usual thermodynamic relations are satisfied within the accuracy of the measurements. Studies were made of diffuser characteristics; in particular, an efficiency of 50% was obtained for a contracting-expanding type of single shock diffuser at M = 4.2. (Author) |
