Description
Summary:The synergistic effect of antioxidant mixtures in synthetic ester lubricating oils was studied. It is noted that ester oils are used as lubricants at elevated temperatures and therefore require effective inhibitors. The ester oil used was an ester of pentaerythritol and C5-C9 monocarboxylic acids. Mixtures of the three phenolic inhibitors, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (Ionol), 4,4'-methylenebis (2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) (designated MB-1 in the source), and 2,2'-methylenebis (4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) (22-46 in the source) between themselves, and mixtures of each of them with (p-hydroxyphenyl) phenylamine (ODFA) and diphenylamine (DFA) were tested in various concentrations. The criterion of antioxidant effectiveness was the induction period in tests involving oxidation of the oil with oxygen at 160C. Test results are given in tabular and graphic form. It was found that inhibitor action was governed both by the chemical structure of the inhibitors and by their relative proportion in the inhibitor mixture. A synergistic effect was exhibited by all mixtures of the phenols with diphenylamine, mixtures of MB-1 with Ionol, and a mixture of ODFA with 22-46 containing >35 mol% ODFA. An antagonistic effect was also observed in certain cases. (Author) Unedited rough draft trans. of Khimiya i Tekhnologiya Topliv i Masel (USSR) n3 p48-51 1966.
