Summary: | In 1963, for the first time 10 authentic and 2 questionable cases of CHF were recorded in Rostov Oblast. Two patients died. By the middle of July 1964, 14 cases were recorded; of them 5 cases were fatal. The first cases in 1963 and 1964, occurred in the second half of May, and the last in 1964 occurred at the end of July. Of the 24 persons who became ill, 16 removed ticks from themselves or squashed them by hand. One case of infection of a physician occurred in the hospital during a blood transfusion to a patient (woman) with a severe form of CHF. Seven patients denied either squashing or being bitten by ticks, but all these persons were in conditions where attack by ticks was quite probable; however, it may have been unnoticed. (Author)
