Summary: | Effective chemoprophylaxis of infections with Dirofilaria immitis was obtained with diethylcarbamazine in a test with 30 laboratory-standardized beagles divided into six sets of 5 dogs each. Twenty-eight to 31 infective heartworm larvae were injected subcutaneously in each dog in four experimental sets. Each dog in three infected sets and dogs of one noninfected set received a daily oral dose of diethylcarbamazine; the two remaining sets were maintained as normal and parasite controls. The dogs were euthanatized 135 to 167 days after injection of larvae. Adolescent heartworms were recovered from all infected, nonmedicated dogs. Worms were not found in any of the dogs in the three infected, medicated or the two noninfected sets. Contraindications to the prophylactic use of diethylcarbamazine were not observed clinically nor pathologically. (Author) |
