description | Adaptation of parainfluenza type 1, 2, 3 viruses to chick embryos was carried out by amniotic inoculation. From 3 to 7 blind passages were required for production of virus possessing hemagglutinating capacity. In contrast to human parainfluenza viruses, simian hemadsorbing viruses are readily passaged both by amniotic and allantoic routes. Inoculation of 1000 ID-O virus into the amniotic cavity of 7-day old chick embryos results in maximum accumulation of the infective virus and hemagglutinins at 4-5 days. The HI test with hyperimmune rat sets prepared against tissue variants of the viruses showed no alteration in the antigenic structure of the chick embryo-adapted variants of parainfluenza viruses after 20-24 passages.
