Description
Summary:The factors affecting the sensitivity and hence the calibration of Eppley Normal Incidence Pyrheliometers are discussed. A method for controlling these factors in a design suitable for balloon flight is described. Using these techniques ground calibration procedures are described. Data obtained during the ground calibration are presented. Analyses of these data indicate that it is possible to calibrate these units against an Eppley Angstrom pyrheliometer with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.05% if one performs the calibration from a high altitude site on days when the atmospheric conditions are proper. These calibrations employ the same measurement system that will be used for a series of balloon flights; hence the calibration accuracy should be maintained during such a flight. (Author)
