Summary: | A description is given of methods of measuring the radiator impedances and impedance notches between the radiators and phasing systems of the UTR-1 radio telescope's multielement phased array antenna. Losses and amplitude and phase distributions of the currents in the antenna radiators were measured in the frequency band from about 10 to 25 MHz (the operating band of the radio telescope) to determine the basic radio telescope characteristics-efficiency, reliability, and effective area. Antenna efficiency (not taking into account losses in the ground) and reliability were determined with errors of about 4% and not more than 6%, respectively. The resulting (rms) error in determining the effective aperture of the antenna, by taking into account errors due to ground effects in the determination of the antenna efficiency and reliability, did not exceed 13%. The latter was confirmed by measuring radiation emitted by a number of known discrete sources, e.g., Cassiopeia-A and Cygnus-A. |
