Summary: | Evaluation and specification of image quality for electro-optical systems are difficult because of the convolution of such factors as modulation transfer function (MTF), which is defined so as to exclude noise, and the noise power spectra. The tradeoff between MTF and noise power spectra has not been established nor has it been considered to have specific, different requirements for various different viewing tasks. Television specifications for example are quite adequate for entertainment purposes but are not adequate for ensuring performance for more demanding visual tasks. This paper discusses specifications required for image-forming devices. In addition, a concept developed by the late T. Brian-Smith has been extended and is put forward as a means to permit evaluation of the combined MTF-NOISE degradation of image quality. (Author) |
