Description
Summary:Work was done in the area nonlinear optics, including a comprehensive experimental and analytical study of second-harmonic generation and other nonlinear optical effects in crystals. The nonlinearity in ADP was measured. Second-harmonic generation was also accomplished in the centro-symmetric crystal calcite, by applying a strong superimposed electric field. Work was done on the Nd:YAG, and led to the following results: Using an electro-optic crystal inside the laser cavity, the laser was tuned over 130 GHz. The dynamics of a repetitively pulsed laser were studied. With an internal phase modulator the Nd:YAG laser was phase-locked, and pulses as short as 38 ps were observed. The FM-laser mode of operation was also observed. The spectral and luminescent properties of rare-earth ions in semiconductors were studied, particularly GaAs doped with neodymium and manganese. This research was later diverted to the study of infrared absorption of free carriers in semiconductors, which led to an infrared converter tube. (Author)
