Description
Summary:Yttrium orthoaluminate is investigated for use as an optically-pumped laser host material. The material was grown using the Czochralski method; growth characteristics and parameters are described. A survey and measurements of various crystallographic, mechanical, thermal, and optical properties of YA1O3 crystals are presented. Laser ion systems studied included Nd3+, Nd3+ sensitized by Cr3+, and Ho3+ sensitized by Er3+, and Tm3+. Measurements were made of absorption, fluorescence, and excitation spectra, absorption and emission cross sections, excited-state lifetimes, and energy transfer processes. Laser performance data are presented for pulsed, Q-switched, and CW operation of Nd3+:YA1O3 at 1.06 - 1.08 micrometers and pulsed operation of Ho3+:YA1O3 at 2.12 micrometers. (Author)
