description The close relation between mechanical properties of metals and their structure is well known. Structure is determined in different ways by the kind, no., and distribution of defects in the crystal lattice. The large effect of the size of substructure entities and their disorientation on mechanical properties has been recognized, but it has been difficult to decide which element of structure plays the decisive role, and to prep. materials with the desired structures. Some new regularities have been found in the formation of substructures, which would allow certain substructures to be prepared with given characteristics. An x-ray technique was used to determine some structural changes in the grains of polycryst, Ni under various treatments. Besides other characteristics, the angles of disorientation of the substructure entities as a function of deformation temperature were studied. The specimens were strained in tension to 2-4 percent.
