Summary: | The long range goal of the current program is to develop the necessary technology for reproducibly fabricating a laser host material with both high peak and high average power characteristics. During the first year's contract, the overall goal was to evaluate Yttralox (90% Y(2)O(3), 10% ThO(2) or ZrO(2) in solid solution) ceramic for these characteristics. The major efforts of the first year's contract were to (1) seek to understand the sintering process with respect to the kinetics of porosity change, (2) develop a process to reproducibility fabricate Yttralox of improved optical quality, (3) evaluate Yttralase as a potential laser material by means of optical measurements, and (4) fabricate five laser rods of the best quality possible for delivery to the sponsor. the kinetics of porosity change, |
