Summary: | Experiments were performed on Ottawa and McCormick Ranch sand to determine the relationship between a stress profile and the resulting size distribution of fragments. Cratering geometry experiments with high explosive charges were conducted to measure the change in particle size distribution of material originally in the crater region. Stress profiles were measured with ytterbium stress gages. One-dimensional strain experiments were performed on a gas gun with stress gages and recovery for particle size analysis. It is concluded that comminution is much more prevalent in dry sand than in wet, especially if clay is present. Little change in grain size occurs at stresses below a kilobar. (Author) |
