Summary: | The purpose of this research is to design several 'small' and 'interesting' computer programs which are attractive and stimulating to the student, are controlled by the student rather than by the teacher, and produce understanding of the knowledge to be learned. This report: describes the assumptions made (interaction, motivation, role of the computer); and three computer programs produced -- a probability and statistics explainer, an elementary algebra explainer, and a preliminary explainer for Chapter 2 of BuPers Naval Training Manual for Damage Controlman 3 and 2. Each of these programs contains an interchangeable message tape, so that if the structure of calls and messages is preserved, the program can apply in many more areas. The report also points out avenues for further development of learner-controlled computer-assisted instruction. (Author) |
