Summary:The report describes a technique for implanting central venous and aortic catheters via the jugular veins and carotid arteries in miniature swine and the device designed and utilized to protect these catheters. Such indwelling catheters were easily maintained for fourteen (14) days in unrestrained, free- roaming pigs while serial blood samples, pressure recording, electrocardiographic monitoring, and cardiac output measuring were conducted and infusion of precise amounts of fluids or drugs administered.
