Description
Summary:Structural fatigue failures usually originate in a small localized region adjacent to stress raisers which typically experience inelastic deformation under service loads. Therefore, fatigue analyses consist of: evaluation of material response to complex inelastic straining sequences; inelastic deformation analysis of local regions near stress raisers; cumulative damage procedures which take inelastic deformation and complexities in service loads into account. These three aspects are discussed for simple loading sequences and a computer-based model which combines all three aspects of analyses for complex load histories is reviewed. Accuracy of the analyses for different loading conditions is checked by using results from recent studies. Finally, this paper attempts to communicate to designers the implications of recent developments in the fatigue analyses of notched and unnotched structural components subjected to service loads.
