Description
Summary:During the construction of Pine Flat Dam, a 440-ft-high, concrete, gravity structure, a complete piezometer system and air-demand measuring facilities were installed in the spillway and outlet works. In June 1956, pressures were measured on the spillway crest and flip bucket for spillway-crest-gate openings of 1 to 8 ft. These prototype pressures compare fairly closely with the pressures measured in model tests of the Pine Flat Dam spillway. The patterns of pressures obtained in tests at four different gate openings are similar. The trajectory of the prototype flip-bucket jet was also observed, and it was noted that the horizontal throw of the prototype jet was less than that measured in the model or that indicated by theoretical calculations.
