Summary: | The mechanical properties of subalpine fir were reevaluated on thirty-five 5-foot bolts collected from 35 randomly selected trees throughout the seven-state area of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. All mechanical properties measured, except compression perpendicular to grain stress at proportional limit, are significantly higher than property values currently used as the basis for allowable design stresses in lumber and plywood. Modulus of rupture was 10 percent higher than current values; modulus of elasticity in bending 22 percent; maximum crushing strength parallel to grain 12 percent; and shear 14 percent higher.
