Summary: | The study examines the Greek Police functions during the 1946-49 guerrilla activities. The background of the guerrilla war was reviewed by reference to a preconflict study done by IAS. The loyalty of the police, as well as other power elements in Greece, was the major factor in the Communist forces losing the war. A series of Communist errors, timely US Aid, and concentration of authority were also important factors in defeating the guerrillas. The reasons that the Communists were able to surface and conduct open warfare were found to be the same as those identified in other areas of the world. (Modified author abstract) |
