Summary: | An in vitro culture system for Plasmodium falciparum involving initial maturation of parasites followed by subculture has been elaborated. Mean multiplication rates of about threefold are obtained after 48 hours and parasite morphology is satisfactory. This system offers a basis for demonstrating the inhibitory action of human and simian immune sera raised against P. falciparum and should therefore provide a means for identifying protective antigens from this malaria parasite.
